YIT Infra to lead major expansion at Helsinki’s West Harbour

The Port of Helsinki is set to begin a significant expansion of the southern end of West Harbour, aiming to accommodate growing traffic between Helsinki and Tallinn in the years ahead. YIT Infra Oy has been awarded the construction contract for the €28 million project, with work kicking off this month and completion slated for the end of 2027.

The expansion will deliver new quay and field areas, bolstering the port’s capacity and reliability as it braces for future growth.

“The start of the expansion of the southern end is a much anticipated and important moment for us at the Port of Helsinki. All traffic between Helsinki and Tallinn will be concentrated in the West Harbour in 2032, and the port’s services will be upgraded to meet the future needs of passengers and cargo traffic”, said Kaj Takolander, VP Passenger Services at the Port of Helsinki.

“We are pleased to have been chosen for this important project. This expansion is a vital part of the Port of Helsinki’s development programme and will help future-proof its operations”, said Aleksi Laine, SVP of YIT’s Infra segment.

The work will be carried out mainly from the sea, so that passenger and cargo traffic can continue to operate as normally as possible throughout the construction period.

This expansion is the first of three major stages in the port’s broader transformation, which also includes a new passenger terminal and an underground tunnel to divert heavy traffic away from surface roads.
