Trelleborg introduces smart, data-driven berthing technology

Trelleborg Marine and Infrastructure has unveiled its cutting-edge Smart Docking Aid System a next-generation berthing monitoring solution designed to drive smarter decision-making, enhance safety, and promote operational and environmental efficiency in ports worldwide.

SmartDAS transforms traditional berthing from a largely subjective process into a precise, data-led operation.

By delivering real-time, objective data, the system enables port operators to address a wide range of challenges from improving safety and optimizing infrastructure to enhancing sustainability.

Richard Hepworth, President of Trelleborg Marine & Infrastructure, highlighted that modern port operations demand intelligent tools that offer actionable insights for both day-to-day activities and long-term strategic planning, and SmartDAS provides the comprehensive data operators need to make better-informed decisions at every stage of berthing operations.

Capable of detecting incoming vessels up to 200 meters away, SmartDAS records key parameters such as distance, speed, and approach angle. This data is securely stored in the cloud, allowing for remote access and integration with AIS to automatically match vessel ID with berthing activity.

The result is a rich, centralized dataset that helps operators identify trends, refine procedures, and make infrastructure decisions based on real-world performance rather than assumptions.

Real-time feedback can also be displayed to incoming ships via mobile LED boards particularly useful during poor visibility or high-risk conditions.

With autonomous monitoring, the system reduces the need for continuous human oversight, offering consistent protection for both vessels and port assets.

Operational efficiency is boosted through features such as historical session replay, automatic reporting, and analysis tools to identify optimization opportunities.

SmartDAS also supports compliance with PIANC WG 211 guidelines by providing detailed, site-specific data for berthing, which informs more efficient fender design and infrastructure planning.

The technology also plays a key role in advancing sustainability goals. By enabling accurate infrastructure planning, it prevents over-design and reduces material use. The system’s preventative monitoring extends asset lifecycles and reduces costly emergency repairs.
