Greece’s Largest Port Enhances Safety and Services for Travelers

Special rooftops to offer shade, new seating and waiting areas are among the works completed at Piraeus, Greece’s largest port, as part of a wider overhaul, said Greek Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy Minister Vassilis Kikilias this week.

The overhaul, he said, aims to enhance the passenger experience and ensure safety. The wider plan also includes improved railings and fencing for departing vehicles, 30 newly installed chemical toilets, and a new signage system to guide travelers more efficiently.

Environmental measures have also been prioritized, with 30 new recycling bins placed across the port and clearer waste separation markings. To bolster passenger safety, 1,700 plastic posts have been installed along the port, while 50 emergency life jackets have been distributed across all coastal shipping piers.

New directional signage now guides passengers arriving from the Metro station, as well as to taxi stands, bus stops, and free port transportation services. In addition, designated parking areas for people with disabilities have been newly marked.

“These actions demonstrate our commitment to both traveler safety and service quality,” said Kikilias. “The port of Piraeus is continuously being upgraded in close cooperation with the Piraeus Port Authority.”
