Retail trade in Greece recorded a substantial drop in May, according to the country’s statistical authority (ELSTAT), with high prices hindering consumer spending.

Specifically, the turnover of retail trade declined by 4.4%, while the volume of trade also decreased by 5.6%, according to ELSTAT.

It is worth noting that these negative results come amid an environment of growing inflationary pressure, as Greek consumers are forced to make hefty cutbacks in spending.

The data indicates that the overall turnover index in retail trade for the month of May was 1.1% down from the previous month of April, while the overall volume index also recorded a drop of 1.7% compared to April 2025.

The seasonally adjusted overall turnover index was also down by 1.1% in May, in comparison to April, while the seasonally adjusted overall volume index recorded a decrease of 2% in May 2025 from April.
