The NBA, in collaboration with FIBA, is working feverishly on the implementation of a new, joint European league, with Greek giants Panathinaikos and Olympiacos among the teams considered. In recent days, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, along with NBA COO Mark Tatum, has been on a mini tour of Europe, holding meetings—including one with Real Madrid.
American podcaster and sports analyst Bill Simmons spoke about the formation of NBA Europe, mentioning that Olympiacos and Panathinaikos are potential targets.
Bill Simmons said the project is expected to have fewer teams than originally estimated. He went on to say that the NBA will likely create a league of 10 teams—maybe eight, maybe 12. “It will offer guaranteed spots, better management of television rights, and improved sponsorships,” Simmons pointed out.
“The NBA is trying to lock in Real Madrid and Barcelona, as both could leave the EuroLeague next year. They also have Milan onboard, which currently doesn’t have a basketball team—but keep them in mind. Beyond that, potential targets include Paris Saint-Germain; a team from London that would be linked with the football departments of Tottenham, Chelsea, and Arsenal; Manchester City; the two Greek teams—likely Olympiacos and Panathinaikos—Fenerbahce, and Alba Berlin.”
