Man says Home Depot has not reimbursed him after employee stole $500 worth of his Bitcoin
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - A retired Midtown resident says a Home Depot employee stole $500 from his Coinbase account while briefly holding his phone inside the store, and he says the company has not taken action to help him recover the money.
The man, who asked to remain anonymous, says he went to the Home Depot on Poplar Avenue in July to purchase a $10 item. He says he asked an employee for help locating it.
“He said, ‘Explain again what it is,’ and I said, ‘Well it’s right here. I’ve got the website open. It’s on my phone.’ So, he said, ‘Well let me see that.’ So, I handed him the phone,” the victim said.
The victim says the employee then climbed a nearby stepladder with the phone, claiming to find better cell service. The shopper said he grew uneasy with his phone now away from his line of sight.
“I said, ‘I’ll tell you what. Give me my phone back.’ In fact, I actually stepped up the ladder and reach out my hand and said, ‘Give me my phone back and I’ll find it myself,’” he said.
During that time, the employee transferred $500 in bitcoin from the shopper’s Coinbase account to another account and deleted the confirmation emails to conceal the transaction. The victim said he did not discover the theft until two days later.
When the victim notified the store, employees reviewed security footage and the employee was fired. However, the shopper says his requests for reimbursement went unanswered.
“I got a response that they would get back with me the next day, but they never did. I tried to call the national office and continued to get quite a runaround,” he said.
The victim also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. He says Home Depot responded initially but again did not follow through.
“Nobody has ever gotten back with me to basically say, ‘We’re sorry for what happened to you when you walked into our store and were, in essence, robbed by our employee,’” he said.
Home Depot said it is currently reviewing the matter but did not respond to specific questions about the reimbursement case.
