EU and US strike trade deal with 15% tariffs on European exports

The United States and European Union have reached a new trade agreement, introducing a 15% tariff on all EU goods exported to the U.S., following high-stakes negotiations between President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
As reported by the BBC, the agreement was reached during private talks at Trump’s Turnberry golf resort in Scotland. The deal reduces previously threatened U.S. tariffs of 30% to 15% and includes EU commitments to open its markets to certain American goods with zero-percent tariffs.
Trump hailed the deal as a “good deal for everybody,” while von der Leyen called it a “huge deal” after what she described as tough but constructive discussions. She added that the agreement is a framework with further technical details to be finalized in the coming weeks.
The U.S. and EU together account for nearly a third of global trade. This agreement marks a significant move toward easing economic tensions between the two sides.
French European Affairs Minister Benjamin Haddad welcomed some aspects of the deal, including exemptions for key French sectors, but described it as “unbalanced” and only a temporary fix.
