The Grimaldi Group has taken delivery of its new vessel Grande Michigan, the eighth ammonia-ready Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) in its fleet. The ship was built by China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu.

The 220-metre-long vessel has a capacity of 9,000 CEU and can carry both electric and conventional vehicles across 14 decks. She has a gross tonnage of 93,145 and a cruising speed of 18 knots.

Grande Michigan features advanced green technologies that cut fuel consumption by up to 50% compared with earlier car carriers. RINA has awarded her the Ammonia Ready notation, confirming future conversion capability to ammonia as a zero-carbon fuel.

The ship is equipped with 5 MWh lithium batteries and shore power capability, enabling zero emissions in port. She also carries 2,500 square metres of solar panels, an air lubrication system, an optimized hull, and a gate rudder for improved efficiency and manoeuvrability. Her engine meets IMO Tier III NOx limits and reduces SOx and particulate emissions.

The vessel will start her maiden voyage on the Asia–Europe service from Taicang, China. She will carry more than 7,000 cars and vans, plus over 100 additional rolling units, to Mediterranean ports.

Grimaldi Managing Director Emanuele Grimaldi said the ship reflects the Group’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and efficient global automotive transport.
