LOGISTEED and REXEV advance EV truck electrification

LOGISTEED and REXEV have initiated a joint demonstration project aimed at accelerating the electrification of logistics operations in Japan, with a focus on optimising energy management for electric truck fleets under real operational conditions.

The project introduces EV trucks into LOGISTEED’s delivery operations while applying REXEV’s energy management and control technologies to improve electricity usage efficiency and overall operational performance.

REXEV’s contribution centres on three areas: minimising basic electricity charges through peak power demand monitoring and control, reducing charging costs by aligning truck schedules with electricity market price movements, and assessing the feasibility of using EV truck batteries outside delivery hours to participate in capacity and supply-demand adjustment markets.

The initiative responds to two pressing challenges facing Japan’s logistics sector.

The first is environmental, as freight transportation dependent on trucking accounts for approximately 20 percent of domestic CO2 emissions, making emissions reduction an urgent industry priority.

The second is structural, stemming from what is referred to in Japan as the 2024 logistics issue, a convergence of driver shortages and tightened overtime regulations for truck drivers that threatens to constrain cargo transport capacity.

Solutions that simultaneously improve transport efficiency and reduce environmental impact are increasingly seen as essential to addressing both challenges.

The demonstration is designed to generate verifiable data on the operational and financial viability of EV truck integration at scale, with findings expected to inform broader electrification strategies across the Japanese logistics industry.
