DP World launches carbon inset trial for ocean freight in Europe

DP World has launched Insetify, a carbon inset trial for ocean freight forwarding customers in Belgium, Portugal, and Sweden.

The program will start April 1, 2026. It aims to reduce customers’ Scope 3 emissions across key European trade lanes.

Carbon Credits for Ocean Shipments

DP World will automatically apply carbon inset credits to qualifying ocean freight shipments. Customers that ship at least 25 TEUs per quarter will receive credits equal to 100 kg CO₂e per TEU.

For example, a customer shipping 50 TEUs in a quarter will receive credits equivalent to 5 tonnes of CO₂e.

Building on UK Carbon Inset Program

The trial expands DP World’s carbon inset program already operating at Port of Southampton and London Gateway Port in the United Kingdom. Since its launch in 2025, the UK initiative has processed more than 250,000 TEUs and issued over 9,000 tonnes of carbon inset credits.

Unlike traditional carbon offsets, carbon insets reduce emissions directly within the supply chain, such as by using lower-carbon fuels in transport operations.

Supporting Supply Chain Decarbonization

The trial also includes sustainability training to help customers understand and manage supply chain emissions.

The launch coincides with DP World’s freight forwarding expansion in Stockholm and Gothenburg. The company aims to move up to 25% of shipments by rail or sea in Sweden during the first operational year to reduce road transport emissions.

The initiative supports DP World’s goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
