Two of the seven Filipino crew members injured aboard the MV CMA CGM San Antonio have safely returned to the Philippines.

As announced, the seafarers arrived in the country on 15 May and were warmly reunited with their families upon arrival. They were welcomed by officials from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), led by Assistant Secretary Jerome T. Pampolina and Director Augusto B. San Diego III, along with personnel from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).

The returning crew members also received initial financial assistance from both the DMW and OWWA. Their repatriation was made possible through the coordinated efforts of the shipowner, the licensed manning agency, the Philippine Embassy, and the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Oman.

Assistant Secretary Pampolina said the two seafarers will continue to receive comprehensive medical and psychological support until they fully recover. He also expressed hope for the swift recovery and safe return of the remaining five injured crew members who are still overseas.

The incident occurred on 5 May, when CMA CGM reported that its container vessel San Antonio was attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, causing damage to the ship and injuries to several crew members.

The latest Seafarers Happiness Index from The Mission to Seafarers highlights a renewed decline in crew welfare, with the overall score slipping to 7.18 in Q1 2026 from 7.26 in the previous quarter. The drop reverses earlier signs of stabilisation seen after the outbreak of conflict in the Persian Gulf.

The findings underscore how rapidly global events impact those working at sea. Industry feedback and survey data alike show that seafarers continue to bear the human toll of geopolitical tensions, while also facing persistent challenges such as heavy workloads, fatigue and prolonged periods away from their families.
