Africa’s Largest Freshwater Passenger Ship Sailing On Lake Victoria

The MV New Mwanza is the biggest inland freshwater passenger and Ro-Pax Ship in Africa, commissioned by the government of Tanzania on January 23, 2026.

It was built at the Mwanza South Port Shipyard by South Korean shipbuilding companies, Gas Entec and KangNam Corporation.

The project also involved local companies like Suma JKT and Songoro Marine Transport.

A massive vocational training program unfolded during its construction, as 2000 locals received formal training under South Korean Engineers.

The freshwater ferry is operated by the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASHICO) and Marine Services Company Limited (MSCL) on Lake Victoria.

New Mwanza is being hailed as a major achievement in the ongoing efforts to strengthen regional trade, connectivity and economic cooperation across East African countries.

Lake Victoria is Africa’s biggest freshwater lake, which borders Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya. It also supports fishing activities along with passenger transport, trade and commerce.
