DNV’s Alternative Fuel Insight (AFI) for April has been released, providing a snapshot of how the alternative fuel orderbook is developing.
According to Kristian Hammer, product manager for AFI and senior consultant at DNV, last month saw 38 vessels with alternative-fuel capability ordered, marking a clear uptick in activity after a relatively slow start to the year.
Of these, LNG accounted for 20 orders across a range of vessel types, including car carriers (8), container vessels (6), crude oil tankers (4), and cruise ships (2). The LPG/ethane carrier segment also remained active, with 14 new orders recorded.
A notable development was the emergence of four ammonia-fuelled bulk carrier orders.
While ammonia remains at an early stage in maritime adoption, these projects are important in moving the conversation about future fuels into practical application and operational learning.
Looking at the broader picture, AFI data shows a total of 83 alternative-fuel newbuild orders in the first four months of 2026. We’ll continue monitoring how this trend evolves over the course of the year, both in overall volumes and in how demand is distributed across different vessel segments.
