In a tragic accident, two children who were part of the Miami Yacht Club’s Youth Sailing Program have died after a barge hit their sailboat near Miami Beach.
The sailboat capsized in Biscayne Bay, between Monument Island and Hibiscus Island, per the Miami Beach Police Department.
All 6 people, an adult and 5 children, were taken to a local hospital, where two juveniles were pronounced dead and two are in critical condition, while the other two did not need medical attention.
The incident happened at 11:00 am on Monday and led to a swift emergency response involving several law enforcement agencies.
As of Monday evening, the sailboat was still under the barge, per the Coast Guard.
The incident is being investigated, and FWC said that its officers are helping the Coast Guard with the investigation.
Frank Florio, commander of Coast Guard Sector Miami, said, ‘Our hearts are with the families of those lost and all who have been affected by this tragedy.
