Delta Terminal upgrades completed at the port of Vancouver

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and Wallenius Wilhelmsen have announced the successful completion of terminal upgrades under the Annacis Auto Terminal Optimization Project in Delta.

The initiative, which began in 2022, involved the consolidation of the Annacis and Richmond Auto Terminals into a single, streamlined facility at the Annacis Auto Terminal.

With the upgrades now in place, the terminal’s annual handling capacity has increased by 36%, enabling it to process up to 480,000 vehicles.

Key enhancements include the addition of 60 railcar spots through expansion of the terminal’s two rail yards, the construction of a new vehicle processing facility, and the installation of eight electric vehicle charging stations.

These developments not only increase operational efficiency but also free up valuable industrial land for future trade-supporting uses contributing to broader economic growth in the region.

Operated by Wallenius Wilhelmsen, the Annacis Auto Terminal serves over ten leading global automakers. In 2024, Canadian auto sales rose by 8%, supported by strong early-year momentum, stable production levels, improved inventory, favorable interest rates, and dealer incentives.

The Port of Vancouver played a critical role in meeting consumer demand, importing nearly 470,000 vehicles a 3% year-over-year increase and a record high for the sector.

The project received funding from the Government of Canada’s National Trade Corridors Fund, along with contributions from the port authority and Wallenius Wilhelmsen.

It is one of nearly 40 infrastructure projects under the Greater Vancouver Gateway 2030 strategy, aimed at generating national, regional, and local economic benefits.

Jennifer Natland, Vice-President of Properties & Environment at the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, noted that the completion of these terminal upgrades is a major milestone that enhances our capacity to support Canada’s growing auto trade.

Minister of Transport and Internal Trade Chrystia Freeland added that these improvements strengthen Canada’s economic competitiveness and help reduce costs for Canadians and British Columbians.
