BAR Technologies joins INTERCARGO

BAR Technologies has joined INTERCARGO as an Associate Member, deepening its role in global efforts to decarbonise dry cargo shipping. The UK-based company is known for its advanced wind propulsion systems and its push to bring sustainable innovation to the maritime industry.

Firstly, the move comes as bulk carriers face growing regulatory and environmental pressure. INTERCARGO, representing the dry cargo sector, plays a key role in technical advocacy and policy coordination. BAR Technologies aims to contribute its expertise, especially as its WindWings® technology gains traction.

In addition, WindWings® are large, rigid sails that generate wind-assisted thrust. They adjust automatically to wind conditions and help ships cut fuel use and emissions. Already installed on vessels like Pyxis Ocean and Berge Olympus, the system is showing real-world impact.

Also, each wing saves around 1.5 tonnes of fuel daily. The recent newbuild Brands Hatch, the first LR2 tanker fitted with WindWings®, is expected to slash CO₂ emissions by over 4,000 tonnes per year.

”Joining INTERCARGO is more than a symbolic step. It’s a practical move to ensure that real-world, deployable technologies, specifically rigid wind propulsion systems led by WindWings®, have a voice in the industry’s most critical conversations. Dry bulk shipping is uniquely positioned to lead the charge on maritime decarbonisation,” stated John Cooper, CEO, BAR Technologies.

Regulators are also recognising wind propulsion. The EU’s FuelEU Maritime regulation now rewards ships using systems like WindWings®. This regulation offers up to a 5% cut in reported emissions intensity. With rigid sails requiring no external power, they’re gaining attention over rotor or suction systems.

BAR Technologies has more installations lined up, including two dual-fuel LR2 tankers due by 2027. The company says this proves wind-assisted propulsion is no longer just theory—it’s a commercially viable part of shipping’s clean energy future.
