EcoNavis secures first Propeller Cap deal

EcoNavis Solutions has secured its first commercial contract for the Eco Boss Cap, a new fuel-saving propeller hub cap launched last year.

The device will be retrofitted to a general cargo ship managed by a Thailand-based operator. EcoNavis has received two purchase orders and says the company is considering upgrades on five more vessels.

Work will take place in mid-August at a shipyard near Shanghai. The vessel is 177 meters long with a 5-meter propeller. EcoNavis engineers will oversee the retrofit and early sea trials.

Dr Batuhan Aktas, Founder & CEO of EcoNavis Solutions, and lead inventor of the technology, said the contract validates years of research, modelling and hydrodynamic testing.

”Eco Boss Cap is tailor-made for each vessel to deliver greater fuel savings over a wider operating envelope,” said naval architect and EcoNavis Chief Operating Officer Amitavo Wye.

This marks the first full-scale use of the Eco Boss Cap. The conical hub features a patented internal chamber system. It’s designed to cut fuel use, reduce emissions, and eliminate propeller-induced cavitation.

The design is based on CFD analysis and tested at top hydrodynamic labs in Europe. Additionally, trials have shown fuel savings of up to 5% across all speeds.

”This cost-effective production means a lower upfront investment, with a payback time of less than a year for a 180m handy-size bulk carrier burning about 25t of fuel per day,” added Aktas.

Also, unlike traditional boss caps with fins, the Eco Boss Cap has no external appendages. Instead, it uses pressure differentials to guide water flow. The result is less turbulence, lower underwater noise, and improved thrust, without added torque penalties.

It’s also simpler to build and install. The cap is cast in a single piece and has no moving parts. Installation takes less than six hours during routine drydock.
