Gdańsk–Hamburg form a strategic partnership

The Ports of Gdańsk and Hamburg are demonstrating that true strength in the maritime sector comes not from competition alone, but from strategic partnership and knowledge exchange.
A recent business delegation from the Port of Gdańsk, led by President Dorota Pyć, visited Hamburg to further deepen the long-standing relationship between these two key European ports.
Dating back to the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages, Gdańsk and Hamburg were once part of a powerful trading alliance that shaped commerce across Europe. Today, that legacy of unity continues through modern cooperation, with both ports embracing partnership as a platform to share best practices, align on standards, and strengthen the Baltic Sea region’s role in global trade.
In a rapidly evolving global landscape shaped by geopolitical tensions, climate change, and digital transformation, the Baltic region holds strategic importance not only as a trade corridor but also as a pillar of European security.
Modern ports like Gdańsk and Hamburg have become more than cargo hubs as they serve as critical infrastructure for NATO military mobility, energy and food supply security, and even the protection of digital infrastructure, such as undersea internet cables.
Their growing role underlines the need for tighter cooperation in facing shared challenges.
The partnership between Gdańsk and Hamburg reflects a recognition that collaboration in areas like energy transition, automation, and digitisation is essential not optional.
President Dorota Pyć emphasized the importance of aligning efforts with the willingness to work together, share experiences, and establish common standards is one of the most important responsibilities for modern ports today.
Joint initiatives may include investments in green infrastructure and real-time data exchange to streamline port logistics and increase efficiency.
While Gdańsk and Hamburg remain competitors within the European port network, their evolving relationship demonstrates that competition can coexist with collaboration.
Michał Stupak, Customer Manager at the Port of Gdańsk, summed it up by saying that partnership between ports means building a secure future together through openness to innovation, joint action on the energy transition, and the development of a shared security framework.
