NORDEN enters ice-class segment with vessel order and 10-year contract

NORDEN has entered the ice-class shipping segment by signing a long-term contract and ordering new vessels.

The company signed a Contract of Affreightment (COA) of up to 10 years with LKAB. The agreement covers the transport of bentonite from Greece to northern Sweden.

To support the contract, NORDEN ordered two 23,000 dwt ice-class multipurpose vessels from Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group. Delivery is expected in 2028.

CEO Jan Rindbo said the deal strengthens long-term business and provides more stable earnings. He added that the vessels expand services in ice-prone regions.

Vessel Capabilities

Each vessel will carry 23,000 deadweight tonnes. They will feature two 80-tonne cranes and meet Finnish-Swedish Ice Class 1A standards. The ships will handle multiple cargo types and operate efficiently in harsh conditions.

The vessels will also run on biofuel. This supports lower-emission transport and builds on NORDEN’s experience in sustainable shipping.

Strategic Impact

The new vessels will expand NORDEN’s fleet and improve service to customers operating in northern and ice-prone waters. The move also strengthens the company’s position in long-term, customer-linked contracts.
