Inaugural Train for Singapore-Malaysia RTS Link Revealed

A recent publication by the Singaporean government highlights an exciting progress in regional transportation. On June 30, Singapore’s Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow and Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke introduced the first trainset for the Rapid Transit System Link, a cross-border metro line.

The project features eight automated driverless trainsets provided by CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive. This new line will stretch approximately four kilometers, connecting Woodlands North in Singapore to Bukit Chagar in Malaysia. Each of these sleek four-car trains measures about 76.5 meters and can accommodate over 600 passengers. The design draws inspiration from the vibrant colors of the malaysian and Singaporean flags, as well as those of Johor state.

The operation of this line will be managed by a joint venture known as RTS Operations, which includes Prasarana RTS Operations and SMRT RTS.

The initial testing phase for this first trainset will take place at the newly established SRTC over several months. This early testing is crucial for identifying any integration challenges that may arise, ensuring that everything runs smoothly as they move forward with the project timeline.

A Boost to Connectivity

The RTS Link is set to launch by December of next year and aims to substantially improve cross-border travel across the Straits of Johor. With a peak capacity reaching up to an impressive ten thousand passengers per direction each hour, it promises not only convenience but also relief from road congestion on nearby routes like the causeway.Passengers can expect their journey time to be around five minutes while completing customs and immigration procedures right at their departure station—making travel smoother than ever before!
