A recent publication by Bloomberg reveals that President Donald Trump is firm on his july 9 deadline for reinstating higher tariffs and has reiterated his intention to halt negotiations with several countries, including Japan.

“No, I’m not considering a delay,” Trump stated on July 1 while aboard Air Force One when questioned about extending the negotiation window. “I’ll be sending letters to many nations.”

The stock market reacted negatively following Trump’s remarks as investors remain vigilant regarding the future of the tariffs he initially paused on April 2 for a three-month negotiation period.

The president intensified his critique of Japan for its reluctance to accept U.S. rice exports and pointed out an imbalance in auto trade between the two countries. He mentioned imposing duties that could reach up to “30%, or even more,” due to what he described as a important trade deficit with Japan.

“I’m skeptical about reaching an agreement; they can be quite challenging,” Trump remarked about negotiations with Japan, adding that they are “very accustomed” to their current trade practices.

In contrast,he expressed more hope regarding potential discussions with India. When asked if an agreement might materialize soon, Trump replied optimistically, “Possibly! This would be a different type of deal where we can compete effectively. Currently, India is quite closed off; though, I believe they may open up soon which could lead us toward lower tariffs.”
