Survey Reveals Business Travelers Prioritize Productivity Over Sustainability in Rail Travel Choices

A recent publication by Amex GBT reveals that the trend of utilizing trains as mobile workspaces is considerably influencing business travelers’ preferences for rail travel over other transportation options.

The company surveyed around 3,000 professionals from France, Germany, and the UK. The findings indicated that a whopping 92% of respondents utilize their train journeys to accomplish work tasks, with 41% admitting they spend more than half of their travel time engaged in work activities. Other compelling reasons for choosing trains include comfort (43%), eco-friendliness (39%), and the opportunity to reflect or strategize during transit (39%).

The survey also highlighted a strong desire among business travelers for quiet zones conducive to focused work.

The results further showed that many european inter-city trains already provide essential amenities for working on-the-go. Over two-thirds (68%) rated the availability of charging stations positively, while a similar percentage (64%) appreciated the workspace available on board.

Though, there’s room for improvement; workers expressed a keen interest in enhanced amenities such as better onboard Wi-Fi (34%), improved mobile connectivity (25%), and dedicated quiet areas designed for concentration (25%).

The UK’s High-Speed Aspirations

The survey found that UK business travelers are particularly excited about high-speed rail initiatives like high Speed 2 and expanded international services compared to their counterparts in France and Germany.

Around six out of ten UK participants stated that access to high-speed rail would increase their likelihood of choosing trains for business trips. Additionally, half believed increased competition among train operators would enhance service quality overall.

This enthusiasm reflects a broader support among UK professionals for faster rail options. p> div >

The researchers noted in Railway Gazette International that perceptions regarding superior rail services abroad were consistent across all three countries surveyed; respondents felt similarly about foreign rail systems being more efficient than local ones. p >

this survey included responses from individuals who travel at least three times annually for work and occasionally opt for train journeys within Germany, France, and the UK. Data collection took place in June 2025. p >

“Prioritizing rail travel can greatly benefit both employees and businesses,” said Jason Geall, Executive Vice President of Global SME at Amex GBT.”Companies can boost productivity while catering to employee preferences and enjoying sustainability benefits associated with train travel.” p > div >
